Thomas M. (Tom) Alexander, III of Big Canoe, Georgia passed away unexpectedly on September 23 at 10:33a.m. at the age of 71, of causes related to a brain aneurysm.
He was born in Raleigh, NC, on June 21, 1945. Tom graduated from Belmont Abbey College in NC and received a Bachelors degree in Economics from Belmont Abbey. He was married to Jerrie Hasson. Tom retired from Bellsouth in 2001 following a 35 year career with the corporation. He was a District Manager of Operations and a Regional Director of Corporate and External Affairs in Georgia.
In his home community of Big Canoe, Tom was a Director of the Home Owners Association, a Big Canoe Fire fighter, President of the Big Canoe Volunteer Fire Fighters Association, and was a Chairman of the Big Canoe Elections Committee, served as Secretary of the Dawson County Development Authority and Dawson County Building Authority and as Vice-Chair of the Republican party in Dawson County. Tom also served Gibbs Gardens, LLC in customer service. Alexander served his Catholic faith family at Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church in Jasper as a reader of the Word at Mass and was an extraordinary minister of the Eucharist.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents Thomas M. Alexander and Lucille B. Alexander. He is survived by his sister Marilou Watson and brother John Alexander of Jacksonville, FL and their families. Tom is survived by his wife of 49 years. He and Jerri were married at the Cathedral of Belmont Abbey in 1967 and are parents of three wonderful children, Dr. M. Sean Alexander (Valerie) of Canton, Ga, Shannon Haskins (Craig) of Birmingham, Al, Lori Crawford (Chuck)of Auburn, Al and their ten grandchildren. Their 49 year journey has left a legacy to three adored children and their beautiful grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00pm Thursday September 29, 2016 at Big Canoe Chapel with Pastor Lamar Helms officiating. Interment at Big Canoe Cemetery.
