Robert G. Webster, 94 of Acworth, GA (formerly of Pickens County) passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 30, 2022 surrounded by his family.
Bob, as he was called, was born on August 30, 1928, in Huron, SD to George and Freda Webster. He graduated with honors from East High School, Sioux City, IA in 1946. Following high school, he joined the U.S. Navy as an Electronics Technician. After his discharge from active duty in the Navy in August 1948, he continued his Navy career in the Reserves as he worked on his college degree. He was released from duty in May 1953, after 6 years and 8 months of service. He married his high school sweetheart, Virginia Walker, on July 27, 1950. He attended Morningside College, Sioux City, IA where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1951. While at Morningside, he was a member of the Gamma lota Alpha Fraternity and the Sigma Pi Sigma National Physics Honorary Society. Bob and Virginia lived in Sioux City, IA raising their four children. Following college, he worked for Armour & Company in Sioux City, IA as an Industrial Engineer. A year later he began teaching high school math and science in local public schools for the next five years. On June 10, 1957, he began working for IBM as a test engineer in Poughkeepsie, NY. One of Bob's career highlights was head of programming on the IBM System/3 Development Team. After Virginia's untimely death in 1959, he married Elaine Ahlstrand on March 11, 1961. Together they increased their family to seven and were happily married for 41 years. His 30+ year career with IBM led him to Rochester, MN, Atlanta, GA, Yorktown Heights, NY and back to Atlanta where he retired in January 1988. After his retirement, he worked another three years as a supplemental employee doing college recruiting. Following Elaine's death in 2002, Bob married Frances Martin on April 17, 2004. After Frances' death in 2009, he moved to a senior adult living community in Canton, GA and then on to his current location at Celebration Village Assisted Living. His family is thankful for the kind and loving care he received while living there.
Bob was a devout Christian who loved studying the Bible, teaching Sunday School and serving in the local church. He enjoyed planning senior adult activities for the J.O.Y. group at First Baptist Church in Alpharetta. He served there as a Deacon and a Sunday School teacher for many years. At the time of his death, Bob was a member of Mt. Zion Church in Canton, GA.
Bob is survived by his children, Greg Webster, Susan Jones, Garry Webster (Cathy), Dan Webster and Lori Mills (Tom); grandchildren, April Raymond (Jenn), Stacy French (Terry), Amanda Martin (Edwin), Emily Anderson and Morgan Crocker (Cody); step-grandchildren, Michael Mills and Christopher Mills; great-grandchildren, Aaron Pedersen, Dawson Pedersen and Elaine Crocker; great-great grandson, Colten Pedersen; his sister Shirley Merrill; brother-in-law Loren Ahlstrand; and a host of nieces and nephews.
He joins his Heavenly Father to be reunited with his parents; three loving wives, Virginia, Elaine and Frances; sister, Mary Anne Sena; Sisters-in-Laws, Charlotte Hogge, Marylyn Swearingen, Betty Walker and Addie Ahlstrand; Brothers-in-Law, John Merrill, Leonard Walker, Oliver Walker, Kenneth Walker, Walter Walker and Dan Sena.
Visitation is Friday, November 4, 2022, at 1:00 pm until the service hour.
Funeral services will be Friday, November 4, 2022, at Cagle Funeral Home Chapel, 364 E. Church Street, Jasper, GA 30143 with Rev. Doug Mulkey officiating.
Pallbearers: Edwin Martin, Cody Crocker, Michael Mills, Aaron Pedersen, Dawson Pedersen.
Interment will be at Sunrise Memorial Gardens following the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Bob's name be made to Mt. Zion Church, 4096 East Cherokee Dr., Canton, GA.
