Richard Hudon McAfee, 85, of Ranger, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at Riverwood Senior Living in Rome, Georgia.
Richard was born on December 7, 1940, in Ranger, Georgia, to Ford and Ozella McAfee, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his older brother, Wayne McAfee. Richard lived many different lives across his eight and a half decades. He briefly served with the Atlanta Fire Department before answering another call to service with the United States Army, where he was stationed in Germany before being honorably discharged following his military service. Much of Richard’s working life was spent in law enforcement, serving with several agencies, including the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department, the Calhoun Police Department, and other law enforcement agencies. He later concluded his career serving the State of Georgia in Probation. Outside of his work and service, Richard was a man who remained curious about the world around him. He was an avid reader, a keen observer of people and life, and was known for his wealth of stories and wisdom. Richard loved music and his dogs, and after retirement, could often be found feeding his squirrels and birds. Richard is survived by his wife of 33 years, Maxine; his children; grandchildren; and many other family and loved ones who will miss him dearly. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the caregivers and staff at Riverwood Senior Living, who cared for Richard and shared in his stories and laughter. In accordance with Richard’s wishes, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to honor Richard may make a donation in his name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Cagle Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of Richard McAfee.
