Jane Swift (74) died peacefully at the Retreat at Jasper February1st, 2024. Jane was born January 5th, 1950 in Chickamauga, GA, and moved to Rome, GA in the summer of 1956. She graduated Model High School, then attended Berry College before graduating from GA State University. Later she moved to Athens to study law and earned a Law degree from the University of GA. After passing the Bar exam she represented the Cabbage Patch Kids at a Law firm in Atlanta.
Jane moved to San Francisco and became a member of the California Bar where she worked in private practice for a few years. She was there in an office building in 1989 when the big earthquake hit the Bay area and had the terrifying experience of feeling the building swaying for several minutes. She decided to move back to Atlanta, She lived there until she retired after many years with the Georgia Emergency Management Authority. Jane lived independently while enjoying retirement, being with friends, listening to Rock music, going to movies, and reading until she developed early onset Dementia a few years ago. She was moved to Jasper in early 2023 to be near her Brother and caregiver. Thank you to the Retreat and Compassus Hospice for their excellent care.
Jane married and divorced in her twenties, did not remarry, and had no children. The youngest of three children, she will be missed by her Sister and Brother. She had two special friends who will also miss her. Ed Stansell, who amazingly dated her in Middle School and still kept in touch with her through all the years. Last, but not least is Lanette Ward who was her best friend during Jane's last twenty years.
She is preceded in death by her Grand Parents: Lola Lee (Doty) McKaig, Webb McKaig, and Fred Lawrence, William Harvey Swift and Effie (Greer) Swift, Parents: James Milton Swift and Dorothy Lee (Lawrence) Swift, her nephew Larry Michael Treadaway, Uncles Fred Lawrence, Harlon Swift, Ray McKaig, William Harvey Swift, Jr., Charles McKaig, and Julian McKaig. Aunts: Gladys (Swift) Crowe, Altha (Swift) Cagle, Dartha Lee (Swift) Bennett, and Myrtis Martha (Swift) Shipp Fitzpatrick, and Laura McKaig. Cousins Debbie Lawrence, Terresa Green, and Karen Whitchurch, Mark Bennett, and great nephew Mark Collett.
Surviving family members are: Sister Brenda Swift Treadaway, Brother Bill Swift and wife Ellen Painter. Aunts Margie Oaks and Imogene Lawrence. Nieces Lori Collett and husband Robert, Julie Dougherty and husband Patrick, Erin Libby and husband Oliver. Grand Nephews Brian Collett and Trey Fitts and Grand Nieces Katelyn Dougherty, Eve Libby, and Nora Libby. Cousins Anita Johnston and family, Gary Wayne Oaks, Sheryl Bennett, Peg Carrell and family, Randall Cagle and wife Beth and family, Steven Crowe and wife, Marilyn (Swift) Doremus, Donna (Swift) Peppers and Sharon McKaig.
A graveside service will be held Monday February 5th at 1 PM at the Lake Forest Memorial Park. Relatives and friends invited. Cagle Funeral Home is handling final arrangements.
