Obituary

James C. Moore, a kind and distinctive man whose life journey spanned continents, disciplines, and decades of unwavering determination, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2025 at the age of 83.

Born in Royesville, Liberia, James was educated and showed promise from an early age. By third grade, his academic talents and ambition led his family to send him to boarding school in London, where he would lay the foundation for a lifelong pursuit of knowledge.

He attended the London School of Economics, where he also spent time as an exchange student in Hamburg, Germany. Never one to rest on his accomplishments, James went on to Columbia University in New York, where he pursued an extraordinary academic path. While at Columbia, he drove a cab to support himself—an example of his unrelenting work ethic and humility.

James was also a proud father; his son, Cahnlay Moore, was born in Harlem, New York, and today resides in Queens, New York with his family.

Since the 1980s, James never "punched a clock"—a point of pride for a man who always valued autonomy. He carved out his own path in business, becoming an entrepreneur who ran his own ventures for over four decades. Whether in California, New Jersey, or Atlanta—James built a life that reflected his values: freedom, intellect, and perseverance.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Phyllis C. Moore, son, Cahnlay Moore (Josette), grandchildren, Qadira, Samira, Naqiya, Wakil, Nazeem, and of course, his Big Canoe family.

James will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege to know him.

A Celebration of James' life will be conducted in the chapel of Big Canoe on May 13, 2025 at two o'clock in the afternoon with Dr. Harry Lucenay officiating.
