Obituary

Charles Mathis, age 95, of Canton, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 28, 2025. A proud United States Navy Veteran, Charles embodied a spirit of service and resilience that touched all who knew him.

Born on March 4, 1930, to Homer and Ruby Reeves Mathis, Charles led a life defined by integrity, dedication, and quiet joy. Following his honorable military service, he devoted his professional career to the Atlanta Federal Prison, retiring in 1980 with deep respect from colleagues and his community.

Charles was known for his vibrant enthusiasm for life—especially when it came to pitching horseshoes, teeing off on the golf course, or exploring open roads on his beloved Honda Goldwing Motorcycle. Whether surrounded by family or engaging in his favorite hobbies, he brought warmth and vitality to every moment.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 48 years, Marie Smith Mathis; one brother; two daughters; one stepson; four cherished grandchildren; and two great-grandsons. His circle of love extended to many dear friends and family, all of whom were touched by his kindness, strength, and humor.

A memorial service to honor Charles's life and military service will be held at Georgia National Cemetery at a later date.

Cagle Funeral Home, in partnership with Sunrise Memorial Gardens, is honored to serve the Mathis family during this time of remembrance.
