Obituary

Rev. Charles Radford Horton, Sr. age 84 of Lilburn, Georgia, went home to be with Jesus on February 14, 2024 at the home of his loving son and daughter- in- law Charles, Jr. and Peggy Horton. He was born at Grady Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia on December 10, 1939 to Leonard Romeo Horton, Sr. and Agnes Mae Rainwater Horton.


He played football for SouthWest DeKalb High School, served in the Army National Guard, coached little league baseball, he helped establish and served as the first vice president of the Lupus Foundations Atlanta Chapter, helped out with numerous projects with the Berkmar Band Boosters for all three children, retired from Chem Central Corporation and helped take care of two of his grandchildren. Rev. Horton was a long term member of Ophir Baptist Church, a Past Master of Sweetwater Masonic Lodge and has served numerous times as a worthy patron at Sweetwater/Anne Winn chapter order of the Eastern Star as well as served numerous times in the Georgia OES grand family. He has presided at weddings, funerals and helped in numerous revivals in the North Georgia area. He enjoyed singing and watching westerns. When recovering from illnesses at rehab facilities, he would minister to other patients by praying or reading the Bible to them. He was never afraid to mention Jesus to others.


He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Leonard Romeo Horton, Jr., sisters Yvonne Horton Harrell, Betty Horton Green, daughter in Law Alison Abel Horton, nephews Christopher Horton and David Horton, numerous aunts and uncles.


He is survived by His loving wife of 65 years Wilma "Louise" Collett Horton, sons Charles "Chuck" Horton (Peggy),Randall " Randy" Horton (Carla), daughter Karen Owens (Mark). A special aunt Jean Grant, a blended family of 9 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other extended family also survive to cherish his loving memory.


A funeral service for Charles will be held on Sunday, February 18, 2024 at Ophir Baptist Church at two o'clock in the afternoon, with Revs. Joe Dan Wilkins, Nicky Gravitt, Richard Martin, and Rudy Tribble officiating.

A Masonic graveside service will be conducted in the church cemetery immediately following the service.


The family will receive friends at Cagle Funeral Home on Friday, February 16, 2024 at two o'clock in the afternoon until nine, Saturday, February 17, eleven o'clock in the morning until nine.
